HISTORY ;;

Darin's father taught him a hand's on approach to life from a young age. He was a poor trader who'd lost his wife in childbirth with not much to show for himself, but he wanted his boy to be a man, so he taught him to grow and kill his own food, to build his own home, to sew his own clothes, to build his own fires.

He taught a hundred and one lessons, but Darin learned only one: being poor is crap. Earn money, and earn it fast, or you'll be stuck doing everything for yourself your entire life. The moment he was old enough, he left that little farmstead, hiked to the nearest town, and never went home.

He got himself a job doing whatever he could until he was able to afford his first set of camels and shipment of jewels to take across the Atsirian wasteland. There was money to be made in that mysterious, sandy East, and he was going to make it.

Growing up with nothing taught him very little about moderation, so Darin was a hearty indulger in those bright days of youth. Atsirian whiskey stirred his blood while Atsirian women stirred his loins, and he swept them off their feet one after the other. Half the women in Atsiria turned up their noses at his attitude, but the other half were fond of his simple peasant charm and big ambitions, and he slept with any one of them who would let him while making a living for himself. He spent too much out to be making a fortune, but that was how he liked it.

His free-wheeling, fun-filled, devil-may-care lifestyle came to an end when one of his lovers ended up with a baby in her belly. For all his childish excess, he was fond of the woman and wanted to do the right thing, and so it was that they settled down into that town he'd made his base of operations and got married. His new wife's family wanted nothing to do with him, but for her twin sister who refused to leave her side, and so it was his life she adopted, because she had nowhere else to go.

Darin, even now, tells the story this way: he was afraid of becoming a father, and on the day before his child was to be born, he packed his bags and was ready to flee on the back of one of his camels that very night. But it was fate, and maybe even the Dragons' will, (though that was the only time they'd ever taken an interested in him) that Mikaela went into labour a day early, just before the sun set. It was an easy delivery, and before he could put his escape plan into motion, he was holding a beautiful baby girl, and nothing could ever had convinced him to run away from her after that.

Casey was, from the moment of her birth, Darin's life. As the years rolled by and his business expanded, Mikaela never again fell with child, and Casey was raised completely in her father's shadow. Darin rarely let her out of his sight, and she never really seemed to want to leave. He began taking her on his caravans when she was very young, to his wife's protests, and was delighted at how quickly she took to the job. More than once, she pitched a convincing sale to a skeptical buyer who couldn't resist a pair of big green eyes and a sassy mouth. Darin cultivated this in her, with amusement at first, and joy as she took to it like a fish to water. By this point, it was clear to him that Mikaela would never give him a son, and so he decided that Casey would play that role admirably.

At first, Mikaela was very happy with that choice. It suited her Atsirian sensabilities. But very soon it became clear to her that Casey become Darin's project and heir meant that Casey would never be at home. Mikaela and Darin's marriage had cooled a bit since their hasty wedding, and it became downright frozen in the following years. Mikaela disliked travel. She wanted her family to stay at home with her, settle down, save their money and get a nice big house and count coins all day. She didn't understand the passion that her husband and daughter had for the job. In fact, she resented it.

Darin responded by pulling away from her and venting his frustrations to his daughter, who vented her own back. They pulled away from Mikaela and closer to one another, scheduling their caravans on wider turns that took them all the way from Eblar to Razen, rarely coming home unless they could help it.

These days, Darin tends to do the exact opposite of what his wife tells him to do. He's happy out there on the road with his little girl, and though their idealogies clash at times, and he wishes that she would settle down and take her place in the world, he sees his young self in her and won't pick a fight. They come at odds, but they're allies to the end, and the most important person in one another's lives ...

... or so he thinks.

Casey's most important person, after all, is Casey.

PERSONALITY ;;

Darin has mellowed considerably since his freewheeling youth. He's now a practical and stubborn businessman with a love for the glint of gold and the freedom of never having to see "home." He's determined, persistant, and passionate about his work. What matters at the end of the day is how much money you've earned to spend, and who you earned it with -- that's all.

He has a strong paranoid streak and it's only strengthened in recent years. His wife sighs over his fears of someone being out to get him, demanding to know what anyone could want from his crapsack, unambitious life, which had only made him protective of his paranoia, convinced that if he doesn't feed it all the time, Mikaela wins.

His constant frustrations of his wife's endless nagging has driven him to distraction. Her letters find him no matter where he goes. Darin drinks to calm himself, and can only occassionally be found sober after midnight.

Casey is his sun and stars, his little girl, and he'll do anything to protect her from the dangers he's sure are out there in the world. He has no idea that she's possibly the most dangerous person he'll ever meet.

APPEARANCE ;;

Darin has auburn hair and green eyes. He's a stolid looking middle-aged fellow and tend to looks fairly well-combed, if a little wearied and often intoxicated.
